The History of the LBC Building

Since its inception in 1958, Lusaka Baptist Church has grown steadily. The church began with a membership of 42. Average attendance today is around 800 on a Sunday. We therefore have serious problems with seating space and many people attending have to sit in an adjoining hall and outside the main sanctuary, and hence the urgent need for major expansion.

Jim Maclure first arrived in Lusaka in February 1970, straight from University. Before arriving he had been put in touch with Prof. Alan & Mrs. Honor Ward, who were teaching at the University of Zambia (UNZA), and on his first Sunday in Lusaka he went to lunch with them, and quickly learnt that Lusaka Baptist Church was where he should go to church.

Jim joined the deaconate, and as a Civil Engineer was involved in planning and helping to arrange for the two side  “extensions” to the church building, which had partition screens so that they could be used for Sunday school/bible class before the services, and then to accommodate more people during the services.

Lusaka Baptist Church Building Projects

Expansion of the Main Sanctuary

Lusaka Baptist Church is soon to undergo its second major expansion work since its inception in 1958. The first was the addition of the Church wings. (See sidebar for details or click here for a slideshow of the project design).

Financial target

By March 31st 2008 (the commencement of construction), we need to raise K500m (approximately $104,000) against a total project budget of K3.0bn ($835,000). To date, we have raised K481.9m (approximately $100,395.83).

Of this, K86.5m (approximately $18,020.83) has been spent on the site survey, professional design services and Lusaka City Council planning and buiding approval, leaving a balance of about K395.4m (approximately $82,300).

Our monthly fundraising target over 4 years, in order to stay on track, is about K50m (approximately $13,890). We are seeking a contribution from our friends and brethren abroad towards bridging this gap.

If you wish to contribute this noble cause, please use our pledge form to commit to either a one-time donation or a regular contribution. We would be very grateful for all donations, and are willing to provide official receipts for tax refund purposes.

We have a bill of quantities and schedule of materials for those who would like to contribute in kind can refer to it for the exact specifications and quantities.
